A.W. Tozer writes that there are 3 ways we can know more about God and His attributes. Prayer, meditation in God’s Word, and “well-disciplined labor” or study redirect our focus from ourselves and the world to our holy God. (The Knowledge of the Holy).
Do you long to know more about God?
“Show me Your ways, O LORD;
Teach me Your paths.
Lead me in Your truth and teach me,
For You are the God of my salvation;
On You I wait all the day.” (Psalm 25:4-5 NKJV)
Are you waiting on the LORD, asking Him to teach you and lead you? He will honor your prayer, leading you in His truth and teaching you about His thoughts and ways.
“’For My thoughts are not your thoughts,
Nor are your ways My ways,’ says the LORD.
‘For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
So are My ways higher than your ways,
And My thoughts than your thoughts.’” (Isaiah 55:8-9 NKJV)
Waiting on the LORD is an active and expectant waiting, and active hope. It begins with turning our focus from ourselves and onto our Father in heaven. As we consider how God has worked in our lives and the lives of others, we may find ourselves thanking Him or asking Him to help us. And the conversation begins. Through prayer, we draw near to God.
Pray
“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God” (Philippians 4:6 NKJV)
In everything by prayer, supplication and thanksgiving, tell the Creator of the Universe what is on your heart. He is listening.
“True prayer is neither a mere mental exercise nor a vocal performance. It is far deeper than that – it is a spiritual transaction with the Creator of Heaven and Earth”
(Charles H. Spurgeon)
God promises that when we seek Him on a daily basis that we will delight to know His ways and draw near to Him (Isaiah 58:2). Our heartfelt prayers of praise, thanksgiving, petitions, confession, and love will become more frequent.
As we draw closer to God, our thoughts focus upon Him more often, and the Holy Spirit will cause us to meditate upon our Lord’s ways.
Meditate
“I will meditate on Your precepts and fix my eyes on Your ways.” (Psalm 119:15 ESV)
As we meditate upon the Lord, we see Him in nature, in other people, in our good times, in our struggles, and in His Word.
We still our thoughts and requests, and we listen to God.
“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” (Psalm 46:10 ESV)
Stillness before God brings us peace beyond our understanding. That peace prompts us to draw even closer to God. Eagerly, we pick up God’s Word, His love letter to us, and we study the Bible.
Study
“Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the Word of Truth.” (2 Timothy 2:15 ESV)
Rightfully handling the Word of Truth, the Bible. That only comes from studying God’s Word.
As God prepared Joshua to lead the Israelites into the Promised Land, He told Joshua that the Law should not depart from his mouth and that he should meditate on it day and night so that he would be successful in leading the people (Joshua 1:8).
Prayer leads to meditation upon the goodness of God, triggering our desire to study God’s Word of Truth.
How has God blessed you through your prayer, meditation, and study of His love letter to you?
