Evil visited America on September 11, 2001. Destruction thundered. Death struck.
At the World Trade Center, 2,763 people died, with a total of 2,996 people dead when 19 terrorists flew passenger-filled planes into the two towers of the World Trade Center, sped into the Pentagon, and crashed into a field in western Pennsylvania.
Firefighters, police officers, Port Authority officers, paramedics, military members, and ordinary citizens leapt into action to help save strangers, with no thought about their own safety. Heroes rescued men, women, and children. Some died, and some heroes ended up with lifelong chronic health problems.
President George W. Bush released a statement that night, “Terrorist attacks can shake the foundations of our biggest buildings, but they cannot touch the foundation of America. These acts shatter steel, but they cannot dent the steel of American resolve.”
For awhile, the churches filled with Americans seeking hope. Some found Jesus. Some heard of miracles. Many asked “Why?”
“These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.” John 16:33
Men and women had courage that day, and some recognized God at work.
My prayer
Almighty God, on this 17th anniversary of 9/11, I pray that Americans will turn to You for the hope that only You can give. We have sinned, Father, please forgive our nation, and turn our hearts toward you. Cause a great awakening and revival in America. Cause us to glorify You and in gratitude acknowledge how greatly You have blessed America. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
“If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land. 2 Chronicles 7:14
