Knowing Our Holy God

Is knowing and understanding our holy God in a deeper way your desire? If so, let’s share our insights with each other during the next few weeks.

In The Knowledge of the Holy, A.W. Tozer urges readers to meditate upon the majesty and awe of God’s presence and holiness.

“Our pursuit of God is successful just because He is forever seeking to manifest Himself to us.” (A.W. Tozer, The Pursuit of God)

As we gaze upon God through prayer, Bible study, fellowship, and contemplation (meditation or thinking deeply about God), we become awe-struck that the God of the universe wants to have a deep relationship with us.

“The fear [reverence, fearful awe] of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom,
And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding
.” (Proverbs 9:10 NKJV)

Our Miracle Worker

There is no god, no one like the LORD. He is glorious in His holiness. He is our Rescuer and our Miracle Worker.

The Israelites saw God work miracles that defeated the Egyptian gods. Then,God led Moses and the Israelites out of Egyptian slavery. They crossed the Red Sea on dry ground, and Moses and the people rejoiced in song to the LORD.

“Who is like You, O LORD, among the gods?
Who is like You, glorious in holiness,
Fearful in praises, doing wonders?
(Exodus 15:11 NKJV)

Almighty God performs wonders and miracles like no other. Reverent and awe-inspired praise break forth from the LORD’s people as they did in the song of Moses.

Our Leader

In the desert, God went before the Israelites in a cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night to give them light. All day and night, the Israelites had a visible sign that God was with them and leading them (Exodus 13:21-22). As they walked with God, He slowly revealed more of His nature to them.

Their Holy One brought them out of slavery to freedom in Him and called them His special treasure (Exodus 19:4-5).

Our Creator Is LORD

Our holy God is set apart from all creation, for He is our Creator.

“For thus says the LORD,
Who created the heavens,
Who is God,
Who formed the earth and made it,
Who has established it,
Who did not create it in vain,
Who formed it to be inhabited:
I am the LORD, and there is no other.”
(Isaiah 45:18 NKJV)

When you meditate on the nature of God, what do you think about? That He created the earth and heavens? Do you think about how God lovingly created man and woman and placed them in a garden where He walked with them in the cool of the day?

Our Redeemer

Adam and Eve disobeyed God’s one command. God is pure and cannot look upon sin. But He made a way to cleanse Adam and Eve and you and me from our sins.

God sent His only begotten Son, Jesus, into the world to take our sins and the world’s sins upon Himself and pay the price that we owed, death—separation from God. Why? So that we could live with Him forever, if we accepted His free gift.

Our Holy God

This is the God we want to know.

He is loving, merciful, gracious, all-knowing, all-present, all-powerful, just, good, and much more than we can imagine.

“… Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!”

(Revelation 4:8c ESV)

“The most excellent study for expanding the soul is the science of Christ and Him crucified and the knowledge of the Godhead in the glorious Trinity. The proper study of the Christian is the Godhead. The highest science, the loftiest speculation, the mightiest philosophy, which can engage the attention of a child of God, is the name, the nature, the person, the doings, and the existence of the great God which he calls his Father” (C.H. Spurgeon, The Immutability of God).[2]

Let’s meditate on the nature of God together in the next few weeks.

How is God revealing His holiness to you?
