God created the heavens and the earth and all that is in them. Light shines from the Bible’s first chapter to its last chapter. This Light reveals the glory of God as it directs the paths of God’s people. Is the Light of the World directing your path?
“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light. And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.” (Genesis 1:1-5 ESV)
God separated the light from the darkness, and He called the light good. Light warms the earth and enables plants to grow. The day awakens creation to its beauty and shows the paths in which we should walk.
Throughout the Old Testament, the light represented the path of the righteous, those who were walking with God.
“But the path of the righteous is like the light of dawn, which shines brighter and brighter until full day. The way of the wicked is like deep darkness; they do not know over what they stumble.” ( Proverbs 4:18-19, ESV)
That path became clearer when in the fullness of time, God sent His Son, Jesus, into the world to shine in the darkness of the world because of sin.
The Light Shines in the Darkness
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him was not any thing made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men. The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” (John 1:1-5 ESV)
Jesus was with God in the beginning and created all things. In Him is eternal life.
The Creator of the Universe, God Eternal, revealed Himself by taking on flesh and entering the world through Jesus. Men and women walked, talked and ate with Him. Jesus taught them and ministered to them. They experienced His love and beheld His purity.
Jesus revealed the way out of darkness and sin into the light of true life.
“A good definition of God is, ‘God is the only infinite, eternal, and unchangeable Spirit, the perfect being in whom all things begin, and continue, and end.’ Another way of saying that God is perfect is to say that God is light.” (David Guzik, Study Guide for 1 John 1:1, BlueLetterBible.org)
The True Light Gives Light
“The true Light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, yet the world did not know Him.” (John 1:9-10 ESV)
“I [Jesus] have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in Me may not remain in darkness.” (John 12:46 ESV)
Jesus came into the world to light the way to God. He entered time to enable creation to see, hear, handle, and learn from Him.
We must reject sin and darkness. Turning from the darkness, we can walk in God’s righteousness through the cleansing of the blood of Jesus His Son.
What an awesome God we have! He wants to have a relationship with us and wants us to know Him.
The Light Brings Fellowship
“This is the message we have heard from Him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with Him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.” (1 John 1:5-7 ESV)
When we have a relationship with God, we walk with Him, know Him, and delight in Him.
We have fellowship with God and other believers, because we become one with them as we are one with God. If we are one with God and He is one with us and He is one with other believers, we are all one with each other.
John urges Christians, whether new to the faith or mature in the faith to walk in the light of God, knowing Jesus as their Righteous One and loving other Christians. He urges them to refrain from walking in darkness and sin.
1 John is such a love-filled letter. John wants us all to walk in love and in the light of Jesus. The result? We receive the promise of eternal life.
Let’s Shine Our Light Upon Others
“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. … In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father Who is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14, 16 ESV)
As we walk in the light of Jesus, our way gets brighter and brighter, for we become more like Him. But the wicked don’t have the light and stumble, for they don’t understand why they stumble.
We can be the light for others. As they see the work we do as a result of knowing God, they may begin to know Him and turn from the darkness and into His light. Let’s glorify our Father in all that we do, for He is our light.
The Lord God Is Our Light!
“No longer will there be anything accursed, but the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and His servants will worship Him. They will see His face, and His name will be on their foreheads. And night will be no more. They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever.” (Revelation 22:3-5 ESV)
Even so, come Lord Jesus!
