God Designed Marriage to Reflect His Love

The marriage between a man and woman can be the most intimate and blessed relationship that a couple can experience on earth. Could it be that God designed marriage to reflect His love for His people?

“And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. Then the rib which the LORD God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man. And Adam said: ‘This is now bone of my bones And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man.’ Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.”

(Genesis 2:21-25, NKJV)

The Bible begins with creation and the marriage of a man and woman, Adam and Eve. The Bible ends with a new creation and the marriage of Jesus to the church, His bride. Throughout the Old Testament, God refers to His chosen people, Israel, as His wife. In the New Testament, the church is referred to as the bride of Christ.

Marriage is important to God.

We are privileged to peek into the marriages of couples in the Bible. One entire book is devoted to the marriage relationship of one couple, the Song of Songs, or some refer to this book as the Song of Solomon. The Rabbis considered this to be the Holy of Holies in Scripture, for they believed that this book also speaks of God’s relationship with His people.

Moreover, both the Old and New Testaments give instructions to couples, guiding them in their marriages.

Imagine God creating a beautiful garden filled with luscious fruits, delicious vegetables, fragrant flowers, towering trees, and friendly animals of all shapes and sizes. There, God created Adam and told him to take care of the garden and name the animals. Adam tended the garden and met all the animals. I like to think that the animals came to him as male and female together. He named them, but he found no companion like himself to help him, no friend to fulfill his needs. Was God preparing Adam to recognize his need for a companion … someone to partner with him in his ministry to God?

As a result, God caused Adam to fall asleep. He took a part of Adam’s side to fashion a woman, Eve. Then, God presented Eve to Adam. Adam was delighted. “This is now bone of my bone, and flesh of my flesh” (Genesis 2:23, NKJV).

Adam and Eve stumbled, just like you and I stumble. Two sinners walking together in a fallen world stumbling in many ways, James 3:2. Yet, together, God empowers husbands and wives to encourage each other, build each other up, and reflect God’s love, so that the husband and wife see the beautiful colors and patterns of the reflections of God’s love shining through the stained glass of their lives.

Because the husband and wife stumble in many ways, broken pieces of colored glass line their paths. As they walk with God, the Holy Spirit picks up that broken glass and forms pictorials of the love that God has demonstrated in their lives. The Holy Spirit hangs these stained-glass memorials around them, and as the Son of God shines His love through the glass, yellows, greens, reds, blues, and unimagined colors bounce upon and through them to their delight. Gifts of love from our Father.

“As in water face reflects face, so the heart of man reveals the man.”
(Proverbs 27:19, NKVJ)

We look into the Living Water and surrender our hearts to God’s Love Gift to His people.  Jesus is God’s Love Gift to you and me. As we surrender to Jesus, our hearts will begin to reflect His divine love – a love that we desperately need.

You are God’s love gift to your husband. You are called to reflect God’s love, so that the beautiful colors, patterns, and pictorials delight your husband and empower him to serve God at his best. The more you reflect God’s love, the more you will be blessed, and your husband and others will be blessed.

Loving Father, thank You for Your gift of marriage. Help us to understand this precious gift in a deeper way. Cause us to reflect Your great love in our marriages, so that our husbands are blessed and prompted to thank You for the partners You have given to them as a sign of Your great love. In Jesus’ name, we pray, Amen.

Eileen, I am so sorry! You are correct! God doesn’t mean for wives to take abuse–either physical or emotional. In the Bible study, we do address abuse and give resources to access. I wrote a post about it, “God Hates Domestic Abuse,” https://possesshispromises.com/2022/09/26/god-hates-domestic-abuse/
