Jesus Chose A Woman to Be the First Evangelist

I loved him, but I couldn’t please him. I was so ashamed when he divorced me. Maybe I’ll please this man. No.

Five men. Five divorces.

I‘ll just live with this man.

The women snub me. They talk behind my back.

I’m so alone. Passed from one man to the next.

No friends.

God, have You also rejected me?

Every day, I lug this waterpot to Jacob’s Well.

I’m so hot!

Wish I could get the water in the morning of evening, like the other women do. But they snear at me and look down on me.

There’s a man sitting at the well! He’s a Jew. He won’t bother me.

Give me a drink.

You’re a Jew, and you’re asking a Samaritan woman for a drink?

If you knew the gift of God and who asked you for a drink, you would have asked Me for living water.

Give me some of this water, so that I won’t have to come here anymore.

Go call your husband.

I have no husband.

You’re right! You’ve had five husbands, and the one you have now isn’t your husband.

Are you a prophet? Where should we worship? We worship on Mount Gerizim. You worship in Jerusalem.

True worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth.

I know that Messiah is coming.

I am He.

She left her waterpot and went into Sychar to tell the men, Come see the man who told me all about myself. Could this be the Messiah?

There must have been something different about her, for they believed her and went to see Jesus.

They begged him to stay, and He and the disciples stayed two days.

We believed when you told us about Jesus, but now we believe because we have heard for ourselves and know that He is the Savior of the World.

In John 4, we see the goodness of Jesus seeking out the brokenness in one woman’s life.

Jesus and the disciples wanted to walk from Judea to Galilee. Most Jews would take the long route to Galilee to avoid going through Samaria. The Samaritans were part Jew and part Gentile, and they mingled pagan religions with the first five books of the Bible, and they built a temple on the top of Mount Gerizim.

The Bible says that Jesus needed to go through Samaria. He had a moral obligation. There was a woman there that He had to meet. He had a divine appointment with the Samaritan woman.

Through the great love of Jesus and His gentle focus on this woman, many in the village and surrounding area came to believe in the goodness of Jesus and that He is the Savior of the World.

Jesus chose a broken woman to proclaim the Good News to men. As a result, many believed.

The Samaritan woman was the first evangelist!

My prayer

Our good, good Father, thank you for honoring women by choosing them to proclaim the Good News of Salvation as well as men. Thank you for giving hope to the brokenhearted and rejected. We praise You for Your gentleness in showing us Your great love. What amazing love the Father has bestowed upon us! We praise and honor You. Come, Lord Jesus. In Your name, we pray, Amen.

One of my favorite stories in the Bible. The Bible is filled with some of the greatest short stories in all of literature.

This story of the woman at the well is so deep,,,so unconventional for that time period…and so perfect for the Son of God and Creator of each of us…Jesus Christ…that it could not possibly be the product of human literary invention.

    Great post!

Thank you, John. You are right, there is so much in this story. One aspect that I really want to study further is the progression of Jesus’ revelation and how that has much to teach us about evangelizing. How many times have I glossed over this story looking at the grace of Jesus which is overwhelmingly beautiful. Yet, His technique might be something that we could take as instruction in gently leading people to Him. Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Karen
