Thanksgiving is coming. Having trouble giving thanks today? Do you think it might be hard to get into the Thanksgiving spirit?
Like this quail surveying the area and waiting, we can survey our lives, pause to ponder God’s promises, wait for the Holy Spirit to give us understanding, and rejoice in the Lord’s goodness towards us.
Before Moses died, he told Joshua that he would lead the people into the Promised land where he would face battles. Moses told him not to be afraid because God would go before him and never leave him or forsake him, Deuteronomy 31:6. After Moses’ death, God gave Joshua a promise that if he would be strong and courageous and meditate on the law day and night that the Lord would be with him wherever he went, Joshua 1:9.
In 2020, we’ve faced many certain battles: COVID-19, other sicknesses and death, isolation, job and financial loss, hurricanes, fires, injustice, rage, riots, strife, and much more. Could God’s promise to Joshua be for today?
Hebrews 13:5b makes it clear that this promise is for us today, “For He Himself has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.’” God’s promise to Joshua is His promise to us.
Pause to ponder God’s promises. Proclaim promise-powered praise!

7 Promise-Powered Reasons to Be Thankful
- Promise of eternal life. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16
- Promise of forgiveness. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9
- Promise of blessings. “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places.” Ephesians 1:3
- Promise of answered prayer. “Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise. Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.” James 5:13-15
- Promise of comfort. “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.” 2 Corinthians 1:3-4
- Promise of peace. “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.” John 14:27
- Promise of love of God. “So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. 1 John 4:16
Eternal life, forgiveness, rest, answered prayer, comfort, peace, and the love of God.
We truly have reason to shout for joy and give thanks to our blessed God and Savior … even in 2020.
May you give thanks this month as you remember God’s abundant promises to you.

Jehovah-Nissi, Your banner of love provides Your people with shelter, identity, and love. Thank you for pouring Yourself out for us. You are all we need, for You are the Sufficient One. You lead us through the trials and comfort us. You gave Yourself as a sacrifice that paid for our sins. You answer our prayers, and You give us peace that passes all understanding. Nothing can separate us from Your love. In You we live and move and have our being. We rejoice in You and give You thanks. You are our Thanksgiving, Blessed Father. In Jesus’ holy name, Amen.
