Living Bread – the Secret

Bread of Life

Our Father in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.
Your kingdom come,
Your Will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread, Matthew 6:9-11

The disciples learned to pray the Jewish way, they had specific prayers to pray towards Jerusalem at least three times a day.

Jesus prayed differently. Prayer was so important to Jesus that He sometimes spent all night in prayer. He rose early in the morning to be by himself to pray. In the middle of His interactions with the people, Jesus broke out in prayer. Prayer seemed to give Him breath, and His very exhale was prayer.

“Jesus, teach us to pray.” Luke 11:1

Pray like this,” He said. Acknowledge the relationship you have with your Father and His address. Ask that His name be revered and treated as holy. Request that He reign in our lives and in the world. Ask that His will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

After three heavenly-minded requests brought to earth, Jesus tells us to ask for our physical needs, our daily bread.

Could Jesus be uniting the spiritual and physical kingdoms in this model prayer?

God provided for the physical needs of the Israelites as they wandered in the desert for 40 years. He cooled them in the day with the cloud and warmed them by night with the pillar of fire. Six days a week, they found a white, coriander-like substance as sweet as honey called manna that served as their bread. Their water came from a rock.

And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst. John 6:35

Jesus is the secret to living in the fullness of life!
He is the Bread of Life!

Jesus provides for our daily physical needs and our eternal spiritual blessings.

What a banquet we have set before us!

My prayer

Our Father in heaven, You have provided all we need for today, tomorrow, and for eternity. Your provision is sweet, and it is abundant. Thank You for sending Your own Son to be our living bread and our living water. Cause this knowledge to sink deep within our being. Transform our prayer lives to become more like the prayer life of Jesus. Holy is Your Name, and we honor Your Name and bow before You with thanksgiving. We love You, Father. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

I love that you showed how God cares about our physical needs as well. As a man, Jesus knew what it was to be hungry, to be tired, to be thirsty, and to be cold. He was in the business of meeting needs and bringing comfort and healing. What a kind God we serve, that he has met our biggest (spiritual) need, and still cares for our little, but very real, physical needs.

God is indeed very interested in our physical needs. He made us to be physical and spiritual beings. Yes, Jesus knew very well what it was to be hungry and thirsty—He fasted for 40 days. I do not know that type of hunger. He created the delight of taste and the refreshing power of drinking liquids. He created rest and healing. He healed me of fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue. He is very interested in the physical AND the spiritual. He inhabits our bodies and calls them the temple of the Holy Spirit! How amazing is that? And yet, we are more than our bodies. Jesus is our Bread of Life. In Him, we live, and move, and have our being. How wonderful to be both physical and spiritual. T.S. Eliot wrote about it in Four Quartets when he wrote, “All shall be well when the fire and the rose are one.” He was alluding to the fact that all shall be well when the spiritual and the physical are one, when the meaning and the word are one. May the Lord richly bless you, Karen

The list of ways that God has provided for me is much too long to list here. During a difficult time financially about 10-11 years ago when we first started our business in our current location, I began to pray daily for God’s financial provision. Suffice to say that bill-paying has become a form of worship for me 😉 I thank and praise Him for His provision with every bill I pay each month. He is so good! Beautiful post! Thank you. <3

Lynn, Thank you so much for sharing that God does provide our daily needs. God is smiling on you as you worship Him with your bill-paying. God is good … all the time … He is good! Thank you for your gracious words and sharing your gratitude for the Lord and a unique way of worship. May the Lord continue to delight you as He provides all your needs, for our God does provide all our needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus!

T.R., What a blessing you are! Praise the Lord that you and your husband were able to go out and enjoy a meal together! God provides in the small things and in the huge things. I wish that I had had the awareness of the presence and work of God in my youth as you have. The Lord has great things in store for you and your husband. May the Lord greatly bless you and give you a greater awareness of His work in your lives. Many blessings, Karen

Today, I felt His assurance. Providing a coupon so my husband and I could go out and have a full meal together for under $10, which we don’t often do now because of our budget. I felt His joy for inspiration, as I make shifted cardboard boxes for shelves, and came up with some ideas to make other items be useful. I feel His encouragement as I work on my book, and work on trusting He will provide the pieces I haven’t connected yet. Amen!

I wrote two different posts on prayer, and the first one digs into the Lord’s Prayer, and then the second one discusses how we should pray, following what Christ gave us. It is indeed a powerful prayer He gave us. Amen, for Him answering our questions. 🙂
