Our Father in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.
Your kingdom come,
Your Will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread, Matthew 6:9-11
The disciples learned to pray the Jewish way, they had specific prayers to pray towards Jerusalem at least three times a day.
Jesus prayed differently. Prayer was so important to Jesus that He sometimes spent all night in prayer. He rose early in the morning to be by himself to pray. In the middle of His interactions with the people, Jesus broke out in prayer. Prayer seemed to give Him breath, and His very exhale was prayer.
“Jesus, teach us to pray.” Luke 11:1
“Pray like this,” He said. Acknowledge the relationship you have with your Father and His address. Ask that His name be revered and treated as holy. Request that He reign in our lives and in the world. Ask that His will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
After three heavenly-minded requests brought to earth, Jesus tells us to ask for our physical needs, our daily bread.
Could Jesus be uniting the spiritual and physical kingdoms in this model prayer?
God provided for the physical needs of the Israelites as they wandered in the desert for 40 years. He cooled them in the day with the cloud and warmed them by night with the pillar of fire. Six days a week, they found a white, coriander-like substance as sweet as honey called manna that served as their bread. Their water came from a rock.
And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst. John 6:35
Jesus is the secret to living in the fullness of life!
He is the Bread of Life!
Jesus provides for our daily physical needs and our eternal spiritual blessings.
What a banquet we have set before us!
My prayer
Our Father in heaven, You have provided all we need for today, tomorrow, and for eternity. Your provision is sweet, and it is abundant. Thank You for sending Your own Son to be our living bread and our living water. Cause this knowledge to sink deep within our being. Transform our prayer lives to become more like the prayer life of Jesus. Holy is Your Name, and we honor Your Name and bow before You with thanksgiving. We love You, Father. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
