Andrew Murray (1828-1917) ministered for 60 years in the Dutch Reformed Church in South Africa. In that time, he authored more than 200 books and tracts, founded educational institutions, and served the vulnerable population.

May these eight quotes from Lord, Teach Us to Pray, inspire you to return to the Lord’s Prayer and pray it in a deeper way. 

1. “The man who would truly worship God, would find and know and possess and enjoy God, must be in harmony with Him, must have a capacity for receiving Him. Because God is Spirit, we must worship in spirit. As God is, so His worshipper” (p.16).
2. “… the knowledge of the Fatherhood of God, the revelation of His infinite Fatherliness in our hearts; the faith in the infinite love that gives us His Son and His Spirit to make us children, is indeed the secret of prayer in spirit and truth. This is the new and living way Christ opened up for us. To have Christ the Son, and The Spirit of the Son, dwelling within us, and revealing the Father, this makes us true, spiritual worshippers” (p. 18).
3. “The secrecy of the inner chamber and the closed door, the entire separation from all around us, is an image of, and so a help to, that inner spiritual sanctuary, the secret of God’s tabernacle, within the veil, where our spirit truly comes into contact with the Invisible One” (p. 20).
4. “Just place yourself before, and look up into, His face; think of His love, His wonderful, tender, pitying love” (p. 21).
5. “It is in the knowledge of God’s Fatherliness, revealed by the Holy Spirit, that the power of prayer will be found to root and grow” (p. 26).
6. “First, Thy name, Thy kingdom, Thy will; then, give us, forgive us, lead us, deliver us. The lesson is of more importance than we think. In true worship the Father must be first, must be all” (p. 26).
7. “No one ever loses by what he sacrifices for the Father” (p. 26).

My Prayer

Our Father in heaven … You are our Creator, Almighty God, You are my Father and the Father of all who are called by Your name. Your name is holy. In Your name, Your children find all that we need for today and forever. You are the Becoming One, becoming all that we need. We honor and cherish Your name. Your name is the sweetness of honey upon our lips. Your kingdom come on earth, and Your will be done in our lives and in our habitations. You have promised Your children all spiritual blessings, and You provide for our physical needs, too. Thank You, Father. Search our hearts and see if any sins are hidden and reveal them. Forgive us, Father. In Your forgiveness, we find strength to forgive others. Lead us by Your right hand through the temptations and the valleys of death and evil, and deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. In the name of Jesus, Amen.
