Sometimes, I get desperate. Many things have gone wrong in the past several weeks. Perhaps it’s because I can’t get Auschwitz out of my head. It could be that work and emails have piled up to unthinkable proportions.
Not really. It’s because I lost my focus on Jesus.
I came home and ate a piece of dark chocolate, Ghirardelli, no less! I took my time. I let it melt in my mouth, savoring the intense cacao and closing my eyes as it spread over my tongue.
Dark chocolate is good for your heart. Yet, it wasn’t my heart that needed settling.
A nice moment, but it didn’t get rid of my issues or my exhaustion. I gave myself a talk, and I remembered Matthew 11.
“Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30
Chocolate revs me up for a time, but I didn’t need energy. I needed rest … the rest that Jesus offers. His rest is for my soul.
Today, I wrestled with the busyness of business, and I was exhausted. I went here and there trying to fulfill the expectations of others – and myself. The burden was heavy.
Today, I was Martha scurrying around, busying myself with things that wouldn’t last. Yet, Jesus said that Martha’s sister, Mary, had chosen the better action. Mary sat at the feet of Jesus and hung on every word He spoke. She was learning from Jesus. Luke 10:39
Jesus asks me to take His burden and to learn from Him. The result, rest for my soul. Not frustration.
His burden is doing the will of God our Father, and when we are doing the will of our Father, He equips us and walks with us along the way.
My prayer
Great Teacher. Thank You for letting me get frustrated today to teach me a lesson … again. I run around and twist myself up into knots before I turn to You for the comfort, the rest, the peace that I truly need. Thank You for reminding me that Jesus is my rest, for He is gentle and humble. His yoke is easy and His burden is light. Lord, I love you. I place my trust in You and rest in You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
