From Dark Chocolate to Jesus

ghirardelli-1 Sometimes, I get desperate. Many things have gone wrong in the past several weeks. Perhaps it’s because I can’t get Auschwitz out of my head. It could be that work and emails have piled up to unthinkable proportions.

Not really. It’s because I lost my focus on Jesus.

I came home and ate a piece of dark chocolate, Ghirardelli, no less! I took my time. I let it melt in my mouth, savoring the intense cacao and closing my eyes as it spread over my tongue.

Dark chocolate is good for your heart. Yet, it wasn’t my heart that needed settling.

A nice moment, but it didn’t get rid of my issues or my exhaustion. I gave myself a talk, and I remembered Matthew 11.

Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30

Chocolate revs me up for a time, but I didn’t need energy. I needed rest … the rest that Jesus offers. His rest is for my soul.

Today, I wrestled with the busyness of business, and I was exhausted. I went here and there trying to fulfill the expectations of others – and myself. The burden was heavy.

Today, I was Martha scurrying around, busying myself with things that wouldn’t last. Yet, Jesus said that Martha’s sister, Mary, had chosen the better action. Mary sat at the feet of Jesus and hung on every word He spoke. She was learning from Jesus. Luke 10:39

Jesus asks me to take His burden and to learn from Him. The result, rest for my soul. Not frustration.

His burden is doing the will of God our Father, and when we are doing the will of our Father, He equips us and walks with us along the way.

My prayer

Great Teacher. Thank You for letting me get frustrated today to teach me a lesson … again. I run around and twist myself up into knots before I turn to You for the comfort, the rest, the peace that I truly need. Thank You for reminding me that Jesus is my rest, for He is gentle and humble. His yoke is easy and His burden is light. Lord, I love you. I place my trust in You and rest in You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

    Thanks for another great post!
I often turn to Psalm 73:21-28 (Begins with “Thus my heart was grieved, and I was vexed in mind. I was so foolish and ignorant. I was like a beast before You. Nevertheless I am continually with You….”
And Psalm 139 in its entirety…
    Many blessings, Pastor Chris

Thank you for these verses. I also love Psalm 139. Isn’t God so marvelous? AND so PATIENT with us. Vexed, foolish, ignorant, and like a beast … that’s how I felt yesterday … and there was the Father … with me … waiting for me to become aware of Him. God is great! God is good … all the time! May God keep you aware of His presence and love, Pastor Chris. Karen

I love how you share your life experiences with us. I feel it helps others as well, like we’re all in this together and because of that we will conquer it.

Angela, we are in this together! We’re brothers and sisters in the Lord. AND we’re all flawed. Thank you for giving me your feedback. You are very gracious. May the Lord richly bless you and open your eyes to His presence, His love, and His great grace. Karen

Mine is Jeremiah 29:11, “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.” He reassures me that HE carries me in HIS heart and in the consciousness of HIS thoughts! If that is not enough, they are thoughts of peace! He lets us know that what happens to us is not hopeless or a confused mess, but it is all working according to His perfect thought and plan.

I thank Him right now for your sharing because it met me right where I am, presently! Thank you, Karen!

Oh, Julie, Thank you for sharing your verse. Isn’t it just awesome that Our LORD thinks of us at all, much less thoughts of peace. Our perfect Father looks upon His children in peace and love even when we’re fidgeting and grumbling! May your day be filled with peace and great awareness of our LORD and maker. Bless you, Julie. In answer to your question, whichever Scriotures the Holy Spirit leads me to at the moment – true rhema!

Good post – praise God for enabling us to enter into His rest, albeit as Paul described, “struggling with all his energy which so powerfully works in me.” (Col. 1:29)

I’m not sure why I’m always amazed when the Holy Spirit teaches me. That’s our promise. I’m delighted that He’s always there for me. I’m humbled that the God of the universe is interested in my petty frustrations and uses them. May the Lord God Almighty work in your spirit and soul, bringing you the truth, the rest, the peace, and the love that captures your very being. Karen
