Chuck slingshot
Pastor Chuck Smith in the Valley of Elah slinging a smooth stone in the Valley of Elah like David whirled his stone into Goliath’s forehead.

You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the LORD will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you down and cut off your head. And I will give the dead bodies of the host of the Philistines this day to the birds of the air and to the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel, and that all this assembly may know that the LORD saves not with sword and spear. For the battle is the LORD’s, and he will give you into our hand. 1Sa 17:45-47

Through God, one man caused a movement that turned the church upside down …

  • Hippies found grace.
  • The Jesus Movement exploded.
  • Hippies became preachers.
  • Rock musicians developed worship music.
  • Worshipers wore jeans to church.
  • Christians lifted their hands to the Lord.
  • Bibles were opened.
  • Bible colleges were built.
  • Calvary Chapels sprouted throughout the US and soon overseas.
  • Non-denominational churches became the trend.
  • Mega churches sprouted.
  • Practical Christian books were written.
  • Harvest crusades began.
  • KWVE was born.
  • The Blue Letter Bible went online.
  • Bible study became easier.

Pastor Chuck Smith lived his life with the gusto of David. His Goliath was the American denominations who had become the synagogues of Jesus’ day, practicing the traditions and teachings of men.

Pastor Chuck was our pastor when we lived in Huntington Beach, California. I cherished Wednesday night worship and walking through the Bible, word-for-word.

Pastor Chuck was our pastor when we moved to Aviano AB, Italy in the 1980s. We tried the base church services. They had to appeal to as many as possible; consequently, there was no substance.

Every Sunday morning, our family sat around the dining room table, Bibles in our laps, and listened to Pastor Chuck’s tapes. Three years of cherished tapes.

In 2001, Keith and I had the privilege of going to Israel with Pastor Chuck and our church in Temecula, Calvary Chapel Bible Fellowship. Once again, we enjoyed the rich teachings of Pastor Chuck in person.

He’s been something of a Papa Pastor to me as we’ve moved from one Calvary Chapel to another, with a sprinkling of other churches.

I’ll miss my Papa Pastor.

Well done, thou good and faithful servant. Enter into the joy of the Lord.

My prayer for you:

Heavenly Father, I pray that you comfort Pastor Chuck’s family and congregation as they celebrate his life and his homecoming to You and the loss of their pastor. Father, he was so committed to You. He was the model for offering his body as a living sacrifice to You. May we offer our bodies as living sacrifices to You. Use us as You used him to set our families, our neighborhoods, our communities, our countries on fire for You. Pour out a double portion of Your Spirit on us, Lord, so that through us, You reach broken lives and restore them. Thank you, Lord, for Pastor Chuck Smith.
